Treated wood is the affordable choice, and with a little care it holds up for as long as 25 years. Cedar costs a bit more and is worth it to a lot of homeowners: it's all-natural, chemical-free, and safe around pets and kids, with a warm grain that ages well.
Our owner started out framing new-construction homes, so the bones of every wood deck we build come first: proper footings, square framing, and posts set to hold. Then we finish it clean, from the stairs and rail down to the last board.
